Red River Technology Center proudly features Lane Battles, a 2020 Welding graduate whose resilience and drive continue to inspire students and instructors alike.
Born with Poland Syndrome, a rare condition that results in the absence of the pectoral muscle and a partially developed right arm, Lane never allowed his disability to define him. Instead, he focused on his abilities, his training, and his passion for welding.
After completing the Welding program at Red River Technology Center, Lane began his career as a welder at Halliburton Manufacturing in Duncan, where he continues to excel. Halliburton has been an incredible partner in his success, accommodating him with a state-of-the-art prosthetic arm designed to assist with his daily tasks and enhance his performance in the field.
Lane’s former instructors recall his unmatched determination and work ethic during his time at RRTC:
“I would say that the word disability never meant anything to Lane,” shared one instructor. “Lane would accept any challenge laid in front of him and never complained about obstacles he had to overcome. He has one of the best work ethics I have ever seen from a student, and that probably helped with his transition into the workforce and with his continued success. I was approached many times before he was hired at Halliburton, and every time I was asked if I thought he would be a good employee, I could only come up with positives.”
Another instructor echoed those sentiments, saying:
“I only have good things to say. He outworked every student in his class. The disability was never brought up, because he never let it slow him down or stop him in any situation he was faced with. He needed a little help navigating through possible solutions to complications that came up from time to time, but he never let anyone outwork him — and it shows.”
When Lane isn’t welding, he channels his creativity into another passion, concert photography. He can often be found at music festivals and independent artist concerts, capturing the energy and emotion of live performances through his lens.
Lane’s story is a shining example of perseverance, skill, and the power of a positive mindset. His success reminds us that true ability lies in dedication and determination; qualities that Lane continues to demonstrate both in his career and his creative pursuits.
