Red River Technology Center to host annual International Observe the Moon Night

Red River Technology Center in Duncan will host International Observe the Moon Night for the second year beginning at 7 pm on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the rear east parking lot on the RRTC campus.

International Observe the Moon Night is open to the community and is hosted by the RRTC Electronics Technology program. This is a weather permitting event and updates will be posted to the RRTC Facebook page and/or on the RRTC website at www.rrtc.edu if necessary.

The International Observe the Moon Night is an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation and understanding of our moon and its connection to our environment, ecology, NASA planetary science and space exploration. The annual event connects scientists, educators, lunar and amateur astronomy enthusiasts from around the world.

The event will include a brief presentation on key characteristics about our moon, observing activities and free hand-outs related to the moon, its phases and exploration.

After the sun sets, visitors will have the opportunity to catch an up close and personal glimpse of the moon. Members of Astronomy Duncan, a local amateur astronomy club, and friends will be on location with their telescopes, providing a guided tour of the moon, visible planets and other celestial objects for visitors to observe.

There will also be a live video close-up image of the moon on display for anyone unable to observe the moon through the available telescopes.

Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating during the event. Red River Technology Center is located at 3300 West Bois D’Arc Ave. in Duncan, Okla.

International Observe the Moon Night is sponsored by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission and partners. LRO is managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
