Red River Technology Center Instructor Honored for Mentor Work

Red River Technology Center Electronics Technology instructor Bill Leyrer was recently honored for his mentoring work with STARBASE 2.0 at Duncan Middle School.

Leyrer was recognized at the sixth annual Oklahoma Mentor Day on Fri., Jan. 19, at a ceremony held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He was presented with his award by University of Oklahoma President and Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence founder David L. Boren, and foundation president Craig Story.

Leyrer loves teaching both high school and adult students at RRTC about electronics and how to build airplanes, rockets, and drones. With STARBASE 2.0, a Department of Defense program focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education, Leyrer works with youth in the fifth through eighth grades about four hours a month in a relationship-rich, school-based environment.

Leyrer has served as a mentor introducing Cadets – students involved in the STARBASE program – for the past four years.

“As a teacher, William (Bill) Leyrer truly believes that we cannot and should not wait until our technically minded students have begun their high school careers to excite and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM,” said David Stacey, deputy director of STARBASE Oklahoma.

Leyrer’s knowledge of rocketry and electronics has helped the STARBASE program enormously and he’s recruited his RRTC students to volunteer.

“Words cannot express the value and the leadership experience this opportunity has afforded not only me, but also my electronics students who have excitedly agreed to join me as a volunteer mentor each year,” said Leyrer. “It is such a joy to witness the combined growth and expressed ingenuity of our Cadets and the awesome progress in untapped leadership potential of the young men and women of our STARBASE 2.0 mentor team.”

“Mentoring Champions” was the theme of this year’s Oklahoma Mentor Day, which is presented by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and its David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative.

Oklahoma Mentor Day is held in conjunction with National Mentoring Month, and honors outstanding mentors who have been selected by mentoring organizations across the state.
